Handle With Care At school, children are overwhelmed with instruction on the right ways to line up, sit down, be quiet, and stay focused on a new task. As a future teacher and an artist, I was interested in how kids reclaim agency in a manipulated environment. I observed children at Spring Valley Elementary school, ages 6-12, doodle, chat, reflect, yell, twirl, stomp, dance, and smile in the classroom, without any instruction. I decided to paint the outside of a box to celebrate how children “make a mess” - leaving their imprint on a structured space. With every box, I imagined a different personality in the classroom. Throughout my process, I explored how kids have an innate power to color, animate, and transform. Comments are closed.
